Investing.com – U.S. stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Consumer Services, Technology and Consumer Goods sectors led shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.17%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.12%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.12%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which rose 3.46% or 5.90 points to trade at 176.29 at the close. Meanwhile, International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) added 2.93% or 3.47 points to end at 122.05 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) was up 2.66% or 4.42 points to 170.40 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which fell 3.57% or 4.33 points to trade at 116.82 at the close. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) declined 3.00% or 1.75 points to end at 56.67 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) was down 1.80% or 2.48 points to 135.07.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Lumen Technologies Inc (NYSE:LUMN) which rose 28.62% to 14.65, Macerich Company (NYSE:MAC) which was up 13.81% to settle at 19.62 and H&R Block Inc (NYSE:HRB) which gained 8.64% to close at 18.35.
The worst performers were Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which was down 5.90% to 27.27 in late trade, Rockwell Automation Inc (NYSE:ROK) which lost 5.69% to settle at 246.00 and Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) which was down 5.02% to 20.43 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Live Ventures Inc (NASDAQ:LIVE) which rose 60.44% to 28.51, Koss Corporation (NASDAQ:KOSS) which was up 60.84% to settle at 9.650 and Aikido Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:AIKI) which gained 50.82% to close at 1.840.
The worst performers were Kaspien Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:KSPN) which was down 16.18% to 30.090 in late trade, Capricor Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:CAPR) which lost 16.49% to settle at 6.430 and Repro Med Systems Inc (NASDAQ:KRMD) which was down 16.57% to 4.28 at the close.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1662 to 1447 and 80 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1831 fell and 1244 advanced, while 59 ended unchanged.
Shares in Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) rose to all time highs; gaining 2.66% or 4.42 to 170.40. Shares in Live Ventures Inc (NASDAQ:LIVE) rose to 5-year highs; up 60.44% or 10.74 to 28.51. Shares in Koss Corporation (NASDAQ:KOSS) rose to 5-year highs; rising 60.84% or 3.650 to 9.650.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.55% to 22.83.
Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.22% or 4.15 to $1851.05 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 0.45% or 0.24 to hit $52.53 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 0.20% or 0.11 to trade at $55.57 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.26% to 1.2168, while USD/JPY fell 0.10% to 103.62.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.27% at 90.127.
