Investing.com – Canada stocks were higher after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Energy, Consumer Staples and Utilities sectors led shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.48%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Trican Well Service Ltd. (TO:TCW), which rose 7.27% or 0.28 points to trade at 4.13 at the close. Meanwhile, Enerplus Corporation (TO:ERF) added 7.12% or 0.79 points to end at 11.88 and Black Diamond Group Limited (TO:BDI) was up 5.73% or 0.95 points to 17.52 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Canexus Corporation (TO:CUS), which fell 3.82% or 0.06 points to trade at 1.51 at the close. BlackBerry Ltd (TO:BB) declined 3.14% or 0.37 points to end at 11.42 and BRP Inc. (TO:DOO) was down 3.12% or 0.87 points to 27.03.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 796 to 624 and 181 ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.02% to 14.12.
Gold for August delivery was up 0.68% or 8.00 to $1185.60 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 1.69% or 1.01 to hit $61.16 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 1.12% or 0.72 to trade at $65.61 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.60% to 0.8156, while CAD/EUR rose 0.19% to 0.7200.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.61% at 94.58.
