China says hopes it can reach trade agreement with U.S. as soon as possible

BEIJING (Reuters) - China said on Monday that it hoped to make a trade deal with the United States as soon as possible, amid intense discussions before fresh U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports are due to kick in at the end of the week.

Beijing hopes it can reach a trade agreement with the United States that satisfies both sides, Assistant Commerce Minister Ren Hongbin told reporters on Monday.

"On the question of China-U.S. trade talks and negotiations, we wish that both sides can, on the foundation of equality and mutual respect, push forward negotiations, and in consideration of each others' core interests, reach an agreement that satisfies all sides as soon as possible," Ren said.

China and the United States are negotiating a so-called "phase one" deal aimed at de-escalating their prolonged trade dispute, but it is unclear whether such an agreement can be reached in the near term.

Washington's next round of tariffs against Chinese goods are scheduled to take effect on Dec. 15.

China has demanded that some of the existing U.S. tariffs imposed on about $375 billion worth of its exports be removed, in addition to cancellation of the Dec. 15 tariffs on some $156 billion of its remaining exports to the United States.

U.S. President Donald Trump has demanded that China commit to specific minimum purchases of U.S. agricultural products, among other concessions on intellectual property rights, currency and access to China's financial services markets.

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said on Friday that the two sides had talked almost daily, but there were currently no plans for face-to-face talks or a signing ceremony between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

With less than a week to go before the deadline amid "intense" negotiations, Kudlow said Trump would make the final decision on the tariffs, which would hit Chinese-made cellphones, laptop computers, toys and clothing.

"We'll have to see, but right now we're moving along," Trump said last week. "On December 15th, something could happen, but we are not discussing that yet. We are having very good discussions with China, however."

China does not need a deal right now. A deal can only work if it benefit both, if not then it is not called a deal. Trump needs to understand this or else we will hear another major China Roar if he tries to poke at the Lion again.
It's going good for USA and they enjoy to see China bleeding. Why would Trump make a deal? He loves what he sees. Especially now after the good job numbers.
China hope = “if US removes all tariffs, then we will purchase some ag products from US that we already need, thus sign a Phase 1 deal”. Uh duh!
fake news to keep the markets moving up
Trump should not be getting credit for appearing to solve problems that he created.
When it's over he will have moved from. Bad deal, to No deal, to Good deal. However politicians do have a habit of creating crisis' just so they can fix them that's a good observation about politics in general.
China is begging for a Deal? Donald won?  Really? ;-)
agree
I think Americans need to read the news from other countries. This "war" is not hurting China. The Chinese government has issued a directive to have only Chinese hardware and software installed in all government departments within three years and to remove everything foreign. In Europe, everything we buy is made in China. I don't remember ever seeing anything made in America. Much as you might wish it were different, I don't believe that China needs the USA.
You may well be correct. Notice that I began, "I think..." :)
Totally agree.. Tariffs on Chinese goods will actually hurt the US economy. Good luck to consumers if such tariffs ever get introduced to electronic goods.
Well said.
this war is really hurting China.
China wants to make a deal in its own favor. It has to be the deal that the American people want.
I don't think this is anything to do with the American people - most haven't got a clue about the intricacies of this "war" - and the very few people making the decisions will not be conferring with the American people - Trump and a few other advisors will be making the decisions - And more than anything else, like all Trump's decisions and policies - it has to massively benefit him and his family - That's what most Americans need to understand (for their own benefit, not mine) but that they don't seem to - the actually believe the BS that is peddled to them - just as far too many people believe the BS peddled by Johnson in the UK. The gullibility of the masses has never been so clearly shown up - since the Germans with *******
that's hilarious - Investing.com doesn't allow me to mention the name of that German dictator that invaded the other European countries.
A deal should favour both American and Chinese people, wonder what kind of smart 'deal' will that be if it only favour one side?
Watch aapl is the indicator if goes up
Will see , may be deal is intact
Tariff will delayed on dec 15, but just for consolation.
I bet it will be extended to another date again.. US companies are so rich today is because of moving manufacturering to China. Just think about the chain effect that happens. Tariffs kick in for electronics. US company temporary absorbs damage. Next financial report will be lost of revenue. US company increases prices for electronics to consumers. Consumers refuse or don't buy due to cost. Retail sales drops in economy report. Recession surely comes. Not very smart move in my opinion to introduce such tariffs.
That’s hint that the trade talk is going nowhere - “there’s no plan for a face-to-face meet for now”. It would be amazing if solution and agreement can be achieved just over phone like that
