U.S. diplomat says told Burundi president of "serious concerns" about violence

BUJUMBURA (Reuters) - A senior United States diplomat told Burundi president Pierre Nkurunziza in a meeting on Thursday that the U.S. government has "serious concerns" about tensions in the east African country, and urged him to allow peaceful protests.

"I explained the very serious concerns that the government of the United States has had, and has going forward about the political process and tensions we have seen," Tom Malinowski, U.S. assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights and labor told journalists after meeting Nkurunziza.

He also urged the government to "allow space for opposition, for press and for civil society....so that the democratic process going forward can be legitimate" ahead of the June 26 presidential vote.
