Australia stocks higher at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 up 5.83%

Investing.com – Australia stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Gold, Metals & Mining and Financials sectors led shares higher.

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 rose 5.83%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Metcash Ltd (ASX:MTS), which rose 24.07% or 0.580 points to trade at 2.990 at the close. Meanwhile, Northern Star Resources Ltd (ASX:NST) added 22.36% or 2.010 points to end at 11.000 and Gold Road Resources Ltd (ASX:GOR) was up 21.12% or 0.170 points to 0.975 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Unibail Rodamco Westfield (ASX:URW), which fell 22.82% or 1.36 points to trade at 4.60 at the close. oOh!Media Ltd (ASX:OML) declined 16.53% or 0.20 points to end at 1.03 and Tabcorp Holdings Ltd (ASX:TAH) was down 10.07% or 0.300 points to 2.680.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 642 to 580 and 262 ended unchanged.

Shares in Unibail Rodamco Westfield (ASX:URW) fell to all time lows; down 22.82% or 1.36 to 4.60. Shares in oOh!Media Ltd (ASX:OML) fell to all time lows; down 16.53% or 0.20 to 1.03. Shares in Tabcorp Holdings Ltd (ASX:TAH) fell to 5-year lows; losing 10.07% or 0.300 to 2.680.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was up 11.84% to 47.354 a new 5-year high.

Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.12% or 1.80 to $1484.70 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 3.93% or 1.14 to hit $30.14 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 2.00% or 0.60 to trade at $30.65 a barrel.

AUD/USD was down 0.69% to 0.6075, while AUD/JPY fell 0.10% to 64.69.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.18% at 98.325.
