Highlights from Friday's NHL games
(The Sports Xchange) - Highlights from National Hockey League games on Friday:
Penguins 4, Panthers 3
Conor Sheary scored the go-ahead goal with 2:53 left to play to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 4-3 win over the Florida Panthers on Friday night.
With the Penguins on the power play, Sheary beat goalie James Reimer with a backhander. The Penguins, who went 3-for-4 on their power play, also got goals from Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin with the man advantage.
Malkin added an assist on Crosby's goal in the second period as Pittsburgh beat the Panthers for the second time in one week.
Crosby has five goals and five assists while Malkin has three goals and seven assists on the season. Goalie Matt Murray (28 saves) earned both wins against Florida, although this was the first home loss of the season for the Panthers in three games.
Capitals 4 Red Wings 3 (OT)
Alex Ovechkin scored on the power play 1:56 into overtime to give Washington the victory over Detroit.
Ovechkin hammered a slap shot into the top corner on the glove side past Wings goalie Petr Mrazek for his NHL-leading 10th goal of the season, ending Washington's three-game losing streak and extending Detroit's losing skid to three games.
T.J. Oshie sent the game to overtime with 1:01 left in regulation when he stuffed the puck past Mrazek (33 saves) from the edge of the goal crease during a Capitals power play. Tomas Tatar scored a pair of third-period goals to put the Wings up 3-2.
Sharks 3, Devils 0
Martin Jones stopped all 28 shots he faced as San Jose blanked New Jersey.
Jones earned his 16th career shutout. As good as he was, Jones was also somewhat lucky as three shot attempts by the Devils struck iron, including a short-handed attempt by Adam Henrique that hit the post 6:20 into the second period when the score was still 2-0.
Melker Karlsson scored his first goal of the season before San Jose took control in the second period as the Devils appeared to wear down. Joe Pavelski deflected a Justin Braun shot past Keith Kinkaid at 5:49 and Joonas Donskoi buried his own rebound at 18:50 to provide the visitors a commanding 3-0 lead.
Jets 4, Wild 3
Captain Blake Wheeler scored the winner with less than seven minutes to play in the third period as Winnipeg edged Minnesota.
Wheeler finished off a saucer pass from left winger Kyle Connor and deking Devan Dubnyk from in close. His first goal of the season was also the 200th of Wheeler's career. Patrik Laine scored twice for Winnipeg.
Connor Hellebuyck stopped 25 of 28 shots in the Jets net for his fourth win of the season while Dubnyk got in front of 26 of 30 at the other end of the ice.
Canucks 4, Sabres 2
Derek Dorsett had two goals and an assist to lead Vancouver over Buffalo.
The Canucks dominated the flow of play throughout and outshot Buffalo 41-22. Daniel Sedin had the game-winner and Markus Granlund also scored for Vancouver (3-3-1), which bounced back from a 6-3 loss to Boston on Thursday. Jacob Markstrom made 20 saves.
Justin Bailey and Jack Eichel scored for Buffalo. Chad Johnson made 37 saves.
Ducks 6, Canadiens 2
Anaheim bounced back from consecutive home losses with a lopsided win over Montreal, which lost its seventh straight and is off to the club's worst eight-game start since 1941.
Ducks goaltender John Gibson finished with 49 saves to earn his third win of the season. The Ducks jumped out to a 3-0 first-period lead on goals from centers Dennis Rasmussen, Derek Grant and Antoine Vermette.
The Canadiens finished the second period with a 30-10 advantage in shots on goal, getting goals from Paul Byron and Brendan Gallagher. The 28 saves by Gibson were the most by a Ducks goalie in a single period in franchise history.
