World Markets Weekend Update: Japan's Nikkei Tops A Mixed Bag

The stunning rally documented in last weekend's update gave way to a relatively tame week. The average weekly gain of the eight indexes on my watch list was near the flatline. The top performing Nikkei rose 2.84% and is up 16.2% since its interim low on October 17th. The S&P 500 was a distant second with its 0.69% advance -- seemly modest, except that its last three closes set new records. Hong Kong's Hang Seng had the worst week, down 1.87%.

China's Shanghai Composite, remains the only index on the watch list in bear territory -- the traditional designation for a 20% decline from an interim high. The index is down 30.34% from its August 2009 peak. See the table inset (lower right) in the chart below .
