Mercury's New SSDs Attract Steady Takers, Boost Business

 | Apr 07, 2019 10:02PM ET

Mercury Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRCY) recently announced that its second generation TRRUST-Stor VPX RT suite of radiation-tolerant solid state drives (SSD) has started witnessing customer adoptions.

These improved SSDs feature up to 940GB capacity in a 6U SpaceVPX form factor; agile interoperability; improved error correction code (ECC) plus both Serial RapidIO and Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) host interfaces. The new device directly responds to solid demand for low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites and mission critical systems operating in the radiation-intense environments.

With the aid of new SSD set, Mercury aims to curb the possibility of data corruption, which comes with the use of NAND flash memory devices in a traditional SSD device on a terrestrial setting without an ECC.

Data corruption incidents occur even more under conditions exposed to radiation because of the single-event effects and the total ionizing dose degradation, which affect the functionality of the NAND flash memory used in the device. An improved ECC performance with 30% more built-in error corrections enables the company’s new 6U devices to read and write operations normally in the presence of harmful ionizing radiation.

The new product is expected to boost the company’s Mercury’s business segment, covering its integrated and pre-integrated subsystems.

Efforts in Subsystems Business Drive Growth

The company is riding high on impressive growth across its product groups, especially Integrated Subsystems plus Modules and Sub-assemblies segments.

The company’s significant investments in embedded computing technology reflect its recent release of the board-to-board data transmission rates of 100 Gigabits per second (Gbps).

Through this, the company intends to enable production of the faster next-generation PCIe Gen-4 Ethernet and InfiniBand high-speed switch fabrics. These fabric switches run within the OpenVPX embedded computing subsystems.

The aforementioned upgrade will significantly increase the bandwidth of the previous OpenVPX switch fabric through Mercury’s strong modeling and design capabilities with the existing backplane and module technologies.

Mercury is currently scheduled to deliver the flowing orders for the TRRUST-Stor VPX RT 6U flight units in the last quarter of this calendar year.
