Commodities: Best And Worst YTD

Talk about a turnaround. Last year the Red Soxs' record in the regular season was 69 wins and 93 losses...this year we all know how the season ended... last evening the Red Sox won the World Series in Boston for the first time since 1918. Their regular season record was 97 victories and 65 losses. What a turn around as last season was their worst record since 1965 and this year they are the best team in the land.

I draw this comparison as I point out the worst and best commodity performers ytd.

Soybean Oil
Do not discount the five worst performers ytd as I have been trading soybean oil from the long side in recent weeks, ytd off by 16% but on the verge of closing above its 50-day MA as of this post for the first time in eight weeks.

Gold is off by 21% and silver down by 27% -- will they shine again in 2014?

A monthly coffee report was just published two days ago written by Kevin Davitt, myself and EGSI Consulting. While we are not ruling out a trade closer to $1, we expect a multi-year low very soon.

And The Worst Performer?
The worst performer in 2013 is maize...lower by nearly 40%. A harvest low has yet to be made in my eyes. With prices currently 7% above $4/bushel, lower trade is likely before we see any ascent. I will be looking for a bullish entry once a harvest low is established. Look for it in the next 15-45 days.
