VIX Non-Commercial Speculator Positions:
Large volatility speculators boosted their bullish net positions in the S&P 500 VIX Futures markets for a third straight week this week, according to the latest Commitment of Traders (COT) data released by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on Friday.
The non-commercial futures contracts of VIX futures, traded by large speculators and hedge funds, totaled a net position of 79,102 contracts in the data reported through Tuesday April 3rd. This was a weekly lift of 4,362 contracts from the previous week which had a total of 74,740 net contracts.
Speculative bullish positions have now risen to the highest level since the February 6th volatility spike when stock markets dropped and inverse VIX ETNs blew up.
VIX Commercial Positions:
The commercial traders position, hedgers or traders engaged in buying and selling for business purposes, totaled a net position of -80,581 contracts on the week. This was a weekly fall of -1,704 contracts from the total net of -78,877 contracts reported the previous week.
VIX:
Over the same weekly reporting time-frame, from Tuesday to Tuesday, the VIX, which tracks the volatility of the S&P 500, closed at approximately $21.41 which was a decline of $-1.09 from the previous close of $22.50, according to unofficial market data.
