Nanoco Group's (LON:NANON) launch of a subsidiary, Nanoco 2D Materials, will provide funding and structure for development work in the field of 2D nanoparticles, which the company has been carrying out with graphene pioneer and Nobel Laureate, Prof. Konstantin Novoselov. The commercialisation of such materials is some way off but the potential looks exciting and the development further emphasises the broad applicability of Nanoco’s nano-materials technology platform, IP and expertise.
The new wholly owned subsidiary will focus the development of a cost-effective method for the production of 2D nano-materials. This new class of materials is semiconductor based and, like graphene, is only one or two atoms thick, possessing a number of interesting properties in its ability to be exceptionally strong, lightweight, flexible and an excellent conductor of heat and electricity. Potential commercial applications include novel catalysts, photo-detectors, photovoltaics, inverters and light-emitting devices. Nanoco has been carrying out initial research work with Prof. Novoselov over the past 12 months to establish the feasibility of these materials. Initial results have been positive and hence the two teams are combining in the new subsidiary to further develop and ultimately commercialise these materials.
